The sun is finally starting to shine! Give your lawn some love…
These Spring lawn care tips will help to have tired turf bouncing back in no time…
The sun is out (barely!) but the end of Winter has finally arrived… This marks prime time for you to give you lawn a good clean up as it reaches the end of its dormancy period. At Advance Turf we have some great spring lawn care tips for you, so that your lawn is looking amazing during the warmer days to come…
TIDY YOUR TURF
It’s no surprise that during the Winter months you probably haven’t given your lawn much attention, during the dormancy period turf requires little maintenance, as it generally doesn’t grow very much at all. However, now is the best time to give your lawn a quick mow and get rid of any leaves laying around, so the lawn is in optimal condition coming into Spring.
GET RID OF WEEDS
The dormancy period is ending and your lawn will start to grow faster again – but that also means your dreaded weeds will start to grow faster too! If we could give you ONE tip regarding your spring lawn care, it’s this… Now is the time to tackle the weeds! Ideally, you can hand pick weeds to get your turf ready to thrive. Make sure that if you do need to use a herbicide, you select the right type for your lawn variety. We recommend using Buffalo Master by Seales or Buffalo Pro by Yates.
CHECK FOR BLACK BEETLE
The Black Beetle larvae is a fat white grub which eats the roots of your lawn – and the results aren’t pretty! Although their favourite meal is your lawn, this beetle can also cause damage to a wide variety of plants. So if your lawn is dying in patches for no apparent reason or the turf has a damaged root system and looks brown or discoloured, then you’ve likely got Black Beetle hanging around! If you do find your lawn has a bad case of Black Beetle you’ll need to kill off the larvae with an insecticide – you can grab one from any gardening store.
TRIM AND TOP DRESS!
Your lawn has probably been neglected for quite some time, so this is the perfect opportunity for you to lightly mow your lawn and top dress any low area or areas with exposed roots. You can top dress with either a river washed sand or a quality top soil.
GIVE IT SOME AIR
Aeration is where the soil is perforated with small holes to allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate the grass roots. This assists the roots and produces a much stronger lawn. The best time for aerating your lawn is during the growth season so the grass can heal and fill in any open areas after soil plugs are removed. Spring is a great time to think about aerating the lawn. You can use a pitch fork, golf shoes or hire a machine if you’re not quite prepared for the challenge.
BRING OUT THE HOSE
The sun is out so it’s time to start watering more regularly again. Make sure every couple of weeks, you’re giving your turf a good dose of hydration!
KEEP YOUR LAWN FED
To prepare your turf for the months ahead, now is the perfect time to fertilise your turf. Applying a slow release fertiliser now will ensure that your lawn has ample food over the coming months to keep it healthy. Make sure when you fertilise your lawn, that you water it in well with a good dose on H20! We recommend Seasol, Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Lawn Food or Charlie Carp All Purpose Fertiliser.
