The Kikuyu grown here at Advance Turf is sometimes confused with the common self-seeding Kikuyu which spreads fairly quickly – often into unwanted areas! However our Mallee Kikuyu is a Male Sterile Kikuyu and as the name suggests, is a sterile form of Kikuyu grass which cannot produce viable seed. This means that this particular variety does not spread by seed, meaning the chances of seed dispersion are almost eliminated. Although it looks almost the same as a normal Kikuyu, our Male Sterile form is much less invasive, making a very popular choice among our customers.
As it is a very aggressive lawn, Kikuyu is perfect for areas with very high traffic or for areas that receive very little attention. This is obviously why this type of turf is so popular amongst our customers with children and pets, as its self-repairing characteristics make it easy to maintain. Although sometimes dogs do cause small amounts of damage to grass, you will find that our Mallee Kikuyu will repair itself much faster than other varieties of turf. Evidently this is often the type of turf you will find on a sporting field because it tolerates a high amount of traffic and repairs itself rapidly.
One thing our Kikuyu is known for is its ability to grow quite quickly (hence the ability to swiftly repair any damage) and therefore it does require frequent mowing. However don’t fret about going away for that extended holiday you planned, because another distinctive feature that makes our Male Sterile Kikuyu so lovable – and something that makes it extremely different to any other type of grass, is the fact that leaving your Mallee Kikuyu for a long period of time and allowing it to grow a little too long won’t cause it to die down once you finally mow it, like most other turf varieties. It may obtain some damage but will re-establish quite quickly, unlike other lawn varieties which would require extra maintenance and care to get back to normal growth.
So if you’re thinking about purchasing a Kikuyu, and you’re not wanting the “weed-like” spread that comes with a common Kikuyu – make sure to purchase a Male Sterile form to avoid self-seeding. The only form of Kikuyu we grow here at Advance Turf is the Male Sterile variety and find it’s loved by many due to it’s low maintenance and extremely hardy nature.
