Premium Mallee Kikuyu

Premium Mallee Kikuyu

Our Premium Mallee Kikuyu is immensely popular for its low water use, hardy wear and tear, and value for money. Kikuyu is commonly found in backyards, nature strips, public areas, ovals, and schools due to its vigorous growth habit which allows it to repair rapidly if damaged.

The runners, with their deep root system, can withstand even the hottest of Summer days but can however find their way under garden edges and pop up in your garden beds. Mallee Kikuyu is a non-seeding Male Sterile Kikuyu (MSK) variety, therefore it is less invasive than many types of Kikuyu and will not spread via seeds, only through its own runners.

Turf Summary

Mallee Kikuyu turf is an affordable variety of lawn that is extremely hard-wearing, and rapidly self-repairs – making it perfect for families with children or pets.

Exceptionally drought-tolerant, requiring very little water once established, Kikuyu grass is an economical allrounder that is known for its vigorous growth.

Installation & Maintenance

Our Premium Mallee Kikuyu can be installed all year round.

Kikuyu is best mowed at low to medium height. If the mowing height is kept reasonably low, the turf will have little thatch. We recommend hand picking any weeds by their roots. Broadleaf sprays control clover, bindi and broadleaf weeds. Before using any chemical, always read the product label for full directions, application, safety directions and guidelines.

Characteristics

Kikuyu has a gorgeous light to medium green colour, the more you fertilise it, the darker it will become. This variety of lawn may become lime green if it’s lacking in fertiliser or yellow if lacking in water.

Kikuyu will continue to grow very slowly over the cooler months. In Victoria over Winter, Kikuyu may lose its lush green colour, becoming a lighter colour. In very cold Winters it may turn yellow/brown, resulted from the frosts burning the turf’s leaves. If you do get a heavy frost you can help to stop it from burning the turf by giving it a quick water in the morning to wash the ice off the leaves. Once the weather warms up in Spring, you can mow the dead leaves off, leaving behind a green lawn. In Summer Kikuyu will need to be mowed weekly.

Deep watering (substantial watering at one time, less regularly as opposed to frequent small watering) promotes the root system to go lower into the soil profile. Kikuyu is a very invasive grass, therefore the turf runners grow under the ground as well as on the top of the ground.

Fertilising

Our Premium Malle Kikuyu should be fertilised in April, September & November. Water the fertiliser in well for maximum effect.
